Beijing’s foreign ministry arm in Hong Kong has hit out against US President Joe Biden’s extension of the city’s “emergency status”, the fourth renewal of an executive order issued in 2020 that removed recognition of the financial hub as a preferential trade partner.

The commissioner’s office of China’s foreign ministry in Hong Kong criticised the US in a statement released on Thursday, calling for Washington to end its “persecution fantasy” and stop intervening in the city’s affairs.

“We urge the Americans to abide by international law and the basic norms of international relations. They should immediately stop intervening in Hong Kong affairs and they should stop putting on political shows that humiliate themselves,” a spokesman said.

“We want to tell the United States that it should end its persecution fantasy.”

The local government also weighed in on Thursday, saying Washington had made reckless statements about the situation in Hong Kong and used American laws to issue so-called sanctions on the city.

“The government strongly condemns [the US’] political grandstanding rife with ill intentions, which have been seen through by all,” a spokesman said.
