Hong Kong police will deploy officers from the counterterrorism and VIP protection units to bolster security for top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi and international representatives who are attending a ceremony for the establishment of an intergovernmental mediation body, the Post has learned.

Wang arrived in the city on Thursday afternoon, a day before the signing ceremony for the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Wan Chai. The organisation will be headquartered in Hong Kong.

A source told the Post that about 100 officers, including members of the force’s counterterrorism response unit, would be mobilised for patrols outside the hotel on Friday.

“As for inside the venue, there will be an appropriate number of officers deployed,” the source said.

“Since there are many VIPs and high-level guests attending the event, we have boosted our manpower.”

Police dogs will also conduct security checks inside the hotel.
