A senior Beijing official overseeing Hong Kong affairs has expressed confidence that the local government will be bold in leading reforms and boost the city’s integration with mainland China to foster better development after arriving for a five-day visit.

Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, arrived in the city at around 5pm on Wednesday via the Shenzhen Bay border crossing and subsequently met leaders of the local executive, legislative and judicial branches.

Xia praised Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu for his leadership in implementing important instructions from President Xi Jinping, taking responsibility in actively safeguarding national sovereignty, security and interests while adhering to the “patriots administering Hong Kong” principle.

“[Lee has focused on] pursuing economic growth, advancing development and improving people’s livelihoods, and has made positive progress in all aspects of work,” Xia was quoted as saying in a statement released by his office late on Wednesday.

He also expressed confidence that Lee and his administration would be “the masters of Hong Kong” and bear the primary responsibility for its governance.
