Requests for help after 2 Hongkongers reportedly killed in Ukraine war
Two men reportedly volunteered to fight for Ukraine in war, but died in Russian attack in Zaporizhzhia Oblast
Immigration authorities are following up on requests for assistance after two Hongkongers were reportedly killed in Ukraine while volunteering in the country’s war against Russia.
In a reply to the Post, the Immigration Department said on Saturday that it had been following up on the requests and was providing support to the families of those involved.
“Upon receiving the relevant requests for assistance, the Hong Kong Immigration Department immediately sought information from the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassy in Ukraine, including the identity of the people concerned, and provided appropriate advice and feasible assistance in accordance with the wishes of their families,” the department said.
“The Immigration Department will continue to maintain close contact with the commissioner’s office, the embassy and the families of the people involved, actively follow up on the incident and provide feasible assistance according to the wishes of the families.”
It stopped short of providing any further details.
The two Hongkongers had reportedly volunteered to fight in the war for Ukraine.
