Police investigate possible poisoning deaths of five dogs on Hong Kong island

Hong Kong police are investigating the death of five dogs who are believed to have been poisoned on one of the city’s outlying islands.
Three of the adult dogs were found dead on Wednesday morning near the village of Tung Tai San Tsuen, on Cheung Chau, while the other two were discovered at the nearby Bela Vista Villa holiday resort.
A police spokesman said the dogs were found dead by a passer-by at about 9.30am, while a police source said a box carrying leftover food was found at the scene.
“We believe some of them were stray dogs,” the spokesman said, adding that the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals would carry out a further examination.
According to the SPCA, an initial examination showed that one of the five dogs, four males and a female, had an identification microchip. However, the group said it could not yet say if the animals had been poisoned, and a toxicological exam was needed.
The society will hand the dogs’ bodies to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department which will carry out a necropsy to determine the cause of the death.
