Will Hong Kong have more ethnic minorities in policymaking? Young winners of diversity awards think so

Bangladeshi Lamia Sreya Rahman, a university student in Hong Kong, is no stranger to the pain of racism in everyday life. She has experienced all manner of discrimination, from being called “ah cha”, a racial slur, to having a local woman refusing to sit next to her on the train.
But among the ethnic minority community in Hong Kong, which comprises about 8 per cent of the population, the 21-year-old is a trailblazer.
On Saturday, Rahman walked proudly onto stage to receive a certificate of recognition, given to 24 talented ethnic minority members by think tank Zubin Foundation. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor officiated the event, titled Diversity List 2019: Youth to Watch.
“After I graduate, I want to pursue a Juris Doctor programme. I wish to become a lawyer and represent ethnic minorities in the future,” she said.
The final year student at the University of Hong Kong also has her sights set on joining government advisory committees on legal affairs.
