For disabled and those with special needs, rehabilitation from illness is a long journey, but one accompanied by Rehabaid Society CEO Cecilia Lam

- Lam spends time assessing clients’ living conditions and ensuring they get adequate service
In a sharing session held at a service centre in Hung Hom, Hong Kong, for people with disabilities, a group of some 40 wheelchair users listen attentively as speakers present challenges many patients encounter on the road to recovery.
The attendees, many of whom are senior citizens, are among a growing number of people who have benefited from the services and support provided by the Rehabaid Society.
The efforts stem from the vision of Dr Cecilia Lam Shiu-ling, the society’s CEO. The charitable organisation has been providing a comprehensive community rehabilitation service for people with disabilities and special needs.
The veteran occupational therapist said her team had continued to develop new services, as rehabilitation could be a lifelong journey and their clients might have different needs along the way.
“While the initial phase of a rehabilitation process may only take a few months, patients’ conditions can deteriorate and need to be reassessed from time to time,” she said.
