A woman fell 50 metres (164 feet) to her death at the most popular hiking section of Sai Kung’s High Island Reservoir on Thursday, soon after another person was injured slipping nearby.

She started the trek from Pak Tam Chung with a 52-year-old friend at about 10am before tragedy struck at about 3pm.

The hiker was airlifted by a Government Flying Service helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where she was declared dead at about 6.15pm.

Hours earlier, another hiker was injured at a nearby location.

The 62-year-old woman lost her balance while out with three others at about 11am, falling 10 metres (33 feet) onto the concrete dolosse for the breakwater, and suffering head and limb injuries.

An ambulance took the hiker to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.
