  • The 36-year-old man, a certified diver, was pronounced dead at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei
  • Police find nothing suspicious, but a postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death

A man drowned during a free-diving exercise in Kowloon Tsai Swimming Pool in Hong Kong on Thursday night.

The 36-year-old accountant was diving at the deepest zone of 3.7 metres in the main pool in Kowloon Tsai Park on Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

His female friend realised something had gone wrong when the man did not resurface in the water after about five minutes at around 9pm. She then drew the attention of other swimmers in the pool.

Swimmers present there pulled him up to the poolside. Lifeguards applied first aid to him before he was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, but he was confirmed dead soon after.

Police found nothing suspicious.

A police source said the man was a certified diver who had managed to freedive for about three minutes.

A postmortem will be conducted to determine the cause of his death.

Swimmers at the site said the deep pool was popular among those coming for breath control exercises.
