An autopsy will be carried out on a two-month-old girl who died after being found unconscious at home in a Hong Kong public housing estate on Wednesday.

Emergency personnel were sent to the infant’s home in Hei Lai House at Wah Lai Estate in Lai Chi Kok shortly before 7am when her 32-year-old father filed a report to police.

“He told police that her daughter was found unconscious inside a bedroom,” a spokesman for the force said.

The toddler was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital, where she was later declared dead.

According to police, the infant did not have any injuries or visible external wounds.

The spokesman said initial investigation by the Sham Shui Po criminal investigation unit found nothing suspicious and there would be a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.

According to the Department of Health, soft objects such as diapers, fluffy blankets, stuffed toys and duvets should not be placed on baby’s bed to prevent them from suffocation.

The department said on its website that babies should also be placed on their back for sleeping.
