Firefighters pulled an unconscious man from a burning flat in northern Hong Kong on Monday after a refrigerator burst into flames just before daybreak, leading to about 100 residents evacuating the building.
Emergency personnel were called to Lung Mun Oasis – a private housing estate on Lung Mun Road in Tuen Mun – after the fire erupted in the 16th-floor flat of Block 10 soon after 5.30am.
The unit’s 32-year-old tenant was found unconscious at the scene and rescued by firefighters, according to police.
“The man had regained consciousness before being taken to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment,” a spokesman said, adding the victim felt unwell after inhaling smoke.
He said about 100 residents had fled the 30-storey building before fire services and police officers arrived.
Firefighters had extinguished the flames by 5.43am.
According to the force, a short-circuit was suspected to have caused the blaze, and officers from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department have been called in to help investigate.
The spokesman said there was nothing suspicious about the cause of the fire.
