The South China Morning Post has bagged nine prizes, including three golds, to become the biggest winner at this year’s prestigious WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards.

The Post won awards in five categories. It swept the board for newspaper infographics, with the gold going to artist Kaliz Lee’s “Hong Kong’s free Covid-19 mass test in context”, which explained the city’s HK$530 million coronavirus screening scheme.

“Arrested development” by Post deputy creative director Adolfo Arranz, which illustrated the more than 8,900 arrests made since social unrest broke out in Hong Kong in June 2019, was awarded the silver medal. And the infographic on “How the coronavirus spread in Hong Kong”, created jointly by Arranz, designer Dennis Wong and creative director Darren Long, took the bronze.

Also taking gold for best breaking news article was the Post’s coverage of the Beijing-imposed national security law, with reporting led by Hong Kong desk journalists Jeffie Lam, Natalie Wong, Gary Cheung and Kimmy Chung. The Post was one of the first to report the legislation’s details in the small hours of July 1 last year, four hours after it was promulgated.

The desk’s live coverage of subsequent protests against the law on July 1, during which more than 300 arrests were made, took silver in the category.

The Post’s This Week in Asia won gold and silver for the best magazine cover design. The layout for “Tourism wakes up” took gold, with the cover story exploring Asia’s battered travel industry.
