Pupils from low-income families in Hong Kong lack opportunities for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education despite efforts by the government and schools at promoting such classes, but a local charity plans to change that.
The HUB Hong Kong will launch a new academy in 2022 to make STEM education accessible for 560 Primary One to Form Three pupils from Sham Shui Po, one of the city’s poorest districts.
Called the “STEMSpark Kids – Building a STEM Academy” and financed by Operation Santa Claus – an annual fundraiser organised by the South China Morning Post and public broadcaster RTHK since 1988 – it will provide free STEM programmes such as coding, app-writing, programming, and 3D printing.
Pupils will also be equipped with creativity, resilience, teamwork and presentation skills, according to the charity’s executive director Josephine Leung Wai-lin.
Founded in 2012, the charity offers services such as tutoring classes, extracurricular activities and counselling to underprivileged children from Sham Shui Po.
