Hong Kong welcomed three newborn babies in the first hour of the Year of the Rabbit on Sunday, with the arrival of two catching their parents by surprise.
The first baby of Lunar New Year was born to the Lee family at United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong at 12.03am, the Hospital Authority said.


Weighing 2.94kg (6½lbs) at birth, the boy is the couple’s first child.
“I thought I would see him after the lunar new year holiday, but he couldn’t wait to be the first ‘baby rabbit’,” the mother said.
“But he doesn’t have to be the number one every time, as long as he’s doing something he likes, it’s all good for us,” she added.
The couple said they wanted their little boy to grow up happy and safe and thanked the hospital staff for their top-notch care.
“During labour, many healthcare workers came to help me, teaching me how to breathe properly and helping me alleviate the pain,” the mother explained.
Her proud husband said she was a “brave and strong mother” and thanked her for her efforts during pregnancy.

Just 22 minutes after the arrival of the first New Year baby, another boy, “Little Bun”, weighing 2.9kg, was born to the Yung family at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam.
“Little Bun”, a nickname he earned for his round face, was also the first child of the couple, who wished their son to have good health, too.

“Mrs Yung also said that, to her surprise, the baby boy was born on the first day of Lunar New Year and that she and her husband will cherish the baby boy as much as they can,” the authority said.
A girl weighing 2.9kg was also born at Hong Kong Baptist Hospital in Kowloon Tong just before 1am.
