Hong Kong rescuers were searching for a man who went missing while swimming off Peng Chau island on Thursday morning.

Police received a distress call at 9.46am from a woman who reported her 67-year-old husband went missing while swimming off Tai Lei, which is connected to Peng Chau by a bridge.

The woman told police she was paddle-boarding when she heard her husband’s call for help, but she was unable to rescue him.

Police later clarified that initial media reports the man fell into the water when his kayak capsized were incorrect.

Divers from the Fire Services Department launched an underwater search, while the Government Flying Service also took part in the effort.
