A Hong Kong taxi driver rammed into a roadwork site after losing control of her vehicle on Wednesday, leaving herself, her two passengers and three workers in hospital.

It was the second such incident in less than 24 hours. A taxi carrying four tourists crashed into a crane truck on Tuesday night, killing the driver.

The Post has learned that the four tourists were an American couple, aged 40 and 42, their three-year-old daughter and the woman’s mother.

The couple were in critical condition in hospital as of Wednesday morning.

The latest incident happened at the junction of Aberdeen Main Road and Aberdeen Praya Road outside Bayshore Apartments at 9.30am.

The taxi crashed into the roadwork site and mounted a raised flower bed at the intersection. Photographs posted online show the front wheels had broken off.

The driver, 58, suffered neck injuries, and her two passengers complained of chest pain, according to the force.

A police spokesman said three workers, all men, were also injured.

All six were taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam for treatment.

Officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic unit are investigating the cause of the crash.

Separately, the American man injured in Tuesday night’s crash in Causeway Bay was sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan for treatment, while his wife was sent to Queen Mary Hospital.

The couple’s daughter and the wife’s mother, 69, were in serious condition at Queen Mary Hospital as of 9am Wednesday. The older woman holds a mainland Chinese identity card.

The 60-year-old taxi driver died of his injuries about an hour after the accident on Gloucester Road outside the World Trade Centre at around 8pm.

A preliminary investigation suggested a crane truck had slowed down because of a traffic jam, with the taxi failing to stop in time and ramming into the back of the other vehicle.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on the case to contact the force at 3660 6814.

Between January and June this year, there were 53 road deaths in as many crashes, while 403 people suffered serious injuries in traffic accidents across the city. In the whole of last year, 90 people died in 89 fatal crashes.
