A crane truck driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after his vehicle hit an overhead cable on Friday, disrupting services on five light rail routes in northwestern Hong Kong for around five hours.
Footage posted online showed the truck’s crane was not properly lowered or secured, which caused a collision with an overhead cable at the On Ting Stop.
The contact caused sparks to fly and clouds of smoke and left broken cable dangling in mid-air.
Police were called to the scene by the truck driver and they confirmed no one was injured. Firefighters helped evacuate more than 240 passengers from a train at the stop.
A passenger who saw the collision told city media that the truck’s crane was not lowered, so it struck the cable and severed it.
