Forty-seven Hong Kong teachers were deregistered last year over professional misconduct, such as involvement in sex- or theft-related crimes and child abuse, more than double the figure for 2022.
In a paper submitted to a Legislative Council panel, the Education Bureau also said that it would offer teachers in the city more study opportunities in mainland China to enhance their ability to foster students’ sense of national identity.
According to the bureau’s statistics, authorities took action against 171 teachers last year over professional misconduct, up from 104 in 2022 and 151 in 2021.
Among them, 47 were deregistered last year, compared with 21 in 2022 and seven in 2021.
The bureau on Friday also said it had issued 69 written warnings last year, a jump from 43 a year earlier. Other actions included issuing reprimand letters, written advice and verbal reminders or making records for future reference.
“It is important to note that there was [a] significant increase in the number of cases against which the Education Bureau has taken action in 2023,” it said.
