Mirror concert accident: Hong Kong dancer Mo Li’s recovery journey going from ‘roller-coaster ride’ to smoother ‘long-haul flight’, father says

A Hong Kong dancer left paralysed after a giant screen fell on him at a Mirror concert almost two years ago is showing steady signs of improvement, with his father saying the recovery journey has gone from a “roller-coaster ride” to a smoother “long-haul flight”.

Mo Li Kai-yin, 29, had experienced slight muscle contractions in his left and upper right arms during a recent medical check, his father, Reverend Derek Li Shing-lam, said over the weekend.

“Compared with before, there were only responses from the biceps and triceps of his right arm … Thank God for his care,” the pastor wrote in his latest prayer letter on Saturday.

“I pray that with God’s creativity and the help of medical technology, his nervous system can gradually work, eventually making his muscles and joints move again.”

On July 28, 2022, Mo Li suffered severe spinal injuries when a four-by-four-metre (13-by-13-foot) screen fell onto the stage during a concert by Cantopop boy band Mirror at the Hong Kong Coliseum, hitting him and fellow performer Chang Tsz-fung.

The incident left Li at risk of permanent paralysis from the neck down.

Derek Li on Saturday also made a wish for Lunar New Year that his son would recover soon, describing the dancer’s journey as a “long-haul flight” that he hoped could “safely arrive at its destination”.

“The past year was like a spiritual roller-coaster ride … now it’s like taking a long-haul flight to wait to get home,” he said.

The pastor added that his son’s heart and lungs were functioning well with the help of exoskeleton technology.

A court last month fined Hip Hing Loong Stage Engineering Company, which was in charge of mechanical engineering maintenance at the concert, HK$420,000 (US$53,685) after it pleaded guilty to six charges. The charges included failing to ensure the safety of their employees, failing to ensure the relevant devices were safe and failing to notify authorities of an accident.

Two other businesses linked to the accident, Engineering Impact and the Studiodanz Company, were fined a total of HK$352,000 in November.
