Hong Kong must be “relentless” in its efforts to attract concerts by global music stars, city leader John Lee Ka-chiu has said, after reports suggested Singapore had tried to tie singer Taylor Swift to an exclusive Southeast Asia performance deal.

Asked whether Hong Kong would consider similar arrangements, the chief executive said on Tuesday authorities would ensure public money was well spent, adding he was aware of the intense competition for major concerts and the potentially huge economic benefits.

“Amid Hong Kong’s fierce competition with other cities that have been striving to improve themselves, we have to be relentless in our efforts to lure mega events including matches, sports events and cultural events,” Lee added before the weekly meeting of the key decision-making Executive Council.

“They will bring tremendous economic benefits and help boost Hong Kong’s image and attractiveness.”

Lee did not outline his administration’s strategies but said efforts would vary depending on the “actual circumstances”.
