A 62-year-old man has died after falling into the sea during a sailing race in Hong Kong.

Fellow crew members alerted police at 1.47pm on Saturday after pulling the man from the sea off Ma Tsai Pai in Sai Kung.

He was unconscious and airlifted by helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where he was certified dead.

Preliminary investigations indicated the man fell into the sea from a sailing boat while taking part in a sailing competition, police said.

The cause of death would be determined by an autopsy, the force said.
