Revellers in fancy dress took centre stage at the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament on Saturday as thousands donned elaborate outfits and many endured hours-long queues to get into the stadium’s famous South Stand.

The atmosphere at Hong Kong Stadium was electric on the second day of the tournament as many fans used the occasion to say goodbye to the arena which has hosted the three-day tournament for decades.

The South Stand has been the traditional section of the ground for rugby fans in fancy dress for many years.

But the Post saw fans dressed in colourful costumes across the stadium, including everything from flamingos, Ikea bags, fairies, cartoon characters and Dubai princes.

“I like it, there seems to be more people dressed up this year,” said 55-year-old British woman Alison Lyons, draped in a Hong Kong flag with a set of crimson red wings.

She was accompanied to the Cathay Pacific and HSBC sponsored event by friend Gioia Sloane, 56, an American who works in education and who has lived in Hong Kong since 2006.
