  • Police receive reports of heavily damaged vehicle on Tuen Mun Road in early hours, with driver suspected to have lost control before slamming into barrier

A 25-year-old Hong Kong driver and his two passengers died on Thursday morning after their car slammed into a road barrier, tearing apart the vehicle.

Police said they received reports at 3.23am from drivers who passed the heavily damaged vehicle on Tuen Mun Road.

“When the car reached Siu Lam, opposite the married quarters of the Correctional Services Department, it was suspected to have lost control before hitting the road barrier,” the spokesman said.

Police said the driver, surnamed Tang, was found trapped inside the vehicle and had sustained serious head injuries. Officers rescued him but he was certified dead at the scene.

The passengers, a 26-year-old man surnamed Chan and a 23-year-old woman surnamed Ng, suffered multiple injuries and were taken unconscious to hospital before dying at 4.06am and 9.19am, respectively.

Police said the New Territories North special traffic investigation team was looking into the fatal crash.

“Anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information to offer is urged to contact the investigating officers on 3661 3800,” the force said.

The Transport Department said at 9.23am that the road lane near Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre, which was closed earlier due to the accident, had been reopened but warned the traffic might take time to clear.

Earlier this month, a 43-year-old man died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into traffic barriers on Tuen Mun Road in Siu Lam.

The city recorded 2,400 traffic accidents resulting in injuries in the first two months of this year, with 15 fatalities, according to provisional police data.

The city logged 17,189 injury-causing traffic accidents last year, a 14 per cent rise over the 15,107 cases in 2022. Fatalities were also up about 6 per cent, from 90 in 2022 to 96 in 2023.
