Neon-decorated revellers drenched by blasts of water cannons danced the night away to the thumping sound of electronic beats on the opening day of the S20 Hong Kong Songkran Music Festival at the Central Harbourfront on Saturday.

Dubbed “the world’s wettest party”, the two-day event combines elements of Thailand’s Songkran water festival with a roster of international artists including Dutch DJ Afrojack, Swedish electronic duo Galantis and Brazil’s Alok.

Tickets range from HK$980 (US$125) for a one-day general admission pass to HK$2,880 for a two-day VIP pass.

While crowds were slow to form earlier, by 7pm hundreds of locals, expats, mainland Chinese visitors and international tourists could be seen entering the Central Harbourfront Event Space dressed in neon-tinged clothing decorated with jewels and other accessories.

“It’s very crazy and very exciting,” said 28-year-old Hongkonger Yoo Na. “The water and the music combined makes it more fun.”

American Geoff Baker said that while there were not many people on the grounds when he arrived at around 3pm, the atmosphere improved as the day went on.
