Hong Kong has set up an investigation and study group to clarify facts and suggest solutions surrounding an escalating conflict between the president of the city’s oldest university and the chairwoman of its governing body.

The announcement was made on Tuesday just after Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu assessed reports from the Education Bureau, which had heard arguments from University of Hong Kong (HKU) president and vice-chancellor Xiang Zhang and governing council chairwoman Priscilla Wong Pui-sze, the pair at the centre of the infighting.

The government said the group, which would begin its work soon, would be headed by Permanent Secretary for Education Michelle Li Mei-sheung and Tim Lui Tim-leung, chairman of the University Grants Committee.

A spokesman said authorities saw a need to “clarify facts” as there were “inconsistencies” in the information provided by different individuals.

He added that the government had to ensure public funds allocated to the university were spent properly.

Residents had “high expectations of the University Grants Committee-funded universities to enhance their institutional governance effectively”, he said.
