Young Hongkongers should chase their dreams, not public housing, the city’s leader has urged amid a trend of residents applying for subsidised flats as soon as they can or who curb their aspirations to meet the requirements.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Tuesday also reminded young people that they might regret their choices or limit their potential by focusing on securing public rental flats, saying their possibilities were greater than what could be brought by these subsidised homes.

“If you waste your possibilities and your dreams for a public housing unit, I believe that [young] people will regret it. For a lot of people, their success today is created from their own struggle and their own hard work,” Lee said.

“The final result of what they achieve [with hard work] is better than what they imagined in the first place.”

Lee added that, rather than working hard for better earnings, some young people had deliberately adjusted their income to meet the eligibility criteria of subsidised public housing, calling it an “inappropriate” move.

“Having a roof over your head is important, but one should not waste their development potential and opportunities simply for a public housing unit,” he said ahead of his weekly meeting with policy advisers on the Executive Council.
