The corporation overseeing Hong Kong’s only private rental housing estate has said it will appeal a court’s decision to stop it from fast-tracking legal procedures to reclaim flats from tenants refusing to leave amid a redevelopment push.

The Hong Kong Settlers Housing Corporation said on Thursday night that it planned to challenge the District Court’s rejection of its push to continue proceeding against 13 tenants who had failed to move out of Tai Hang Sai Estate before a deadline in March.

“The corporation does not agree with the District Court’s judgment on our civil case. Our legal team is working on the next step and we will file an appeal to clarify the facts and points of law,” a spokesman said.

He added that the corporation had yet to take back 19 flats among the estate’s 1,600 homes, including three that would be returned shortly and 16 considered to be illegally occupied.

The 16 cases include three being allowed to relocate to public housing, one household being offered temporary housing and two flats believed to be empty.

The corporation, which is associated with property giant Henderson Land Development, broached the idea of redeveloping the estate a decade ago.
