A Hong Kong truck driver died after a 1.7-tonne industrial oven slid off his vehicle and crushed him at a public cargo working area in Kowloon on Thursday.

The man, 29, was helping to unload the oven from his truck at the Hoi Fai Road site in Yau Ma Tei at around 1.24pm when he was hit, police said.

“The oven, measuring 163cm long, 163cm wide and 180cm high, and weighing 1.7 tonnes, slid off the vehicle and hit the victim,” police said.

The man suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.

According to the force, the victim later died in hospital and an autopsy would be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.

A source said the oven was first moved to the rear platform of the truck.
