A 23-year-old university graduate has been crowned Miss Hong Kong 2024.
Ellyn Ngai Lok-lam beat 14 others to claim the top prize in the city’s flagship beauty contest on Sunday evening. Students Emily Leung Ka-ying, 22, and Amina Yeung Chi-jiu, 21, were named first and second runner-up respectively.
Leung was also named Miss Photogenic in the pageant organised by broadcaster TVB.
The 167.5cm (5.5 feet) tall Ngai is a graduate of City University, where classmates dubbed her the “Michele Reis of CityU”.
Reis is a former actress and won the Miss Chinese International Pageant and Miss Hong Kong beauty contests in 1988.
Ngai talked about her ambitions after winning the contest.

“I am very interested in trying acting, and I am also very interested in hosting,” she said.
“I think the other thing I would most like to do is to understand some of the livelihood situations of low-income residents because Miss Hong Kong needs to take part in some charity events.”
She said her hobbies were reading, singing and dancing.
Ngai is a former member of local dance group Morii Girls, which she joined in 2022 under the name Stella Ngai. The group released a swimsuit photo book last year.
Asked why she chose to use another name for the beauty contest, Ngai said: “Stella is too popular a name. I was afraid there would be other girls with the same name and people could get confused.”
This year’s pageant, themed “Proud to be a Woman”, broke with tradition by featuring an all-female line-up from emcees and guest performers to judges, many of whom had previously held the title of Miss Hong Kong, including Virginia Yung, Monica Chan, Mandy Cho and Sandy Lau.

Contestants were put through their paces in the evening, taking part in swimsuit showcases, a talent section and a question and answer segment.
More interactive elements were added to this year’s event, including allowing internet users to not only vote for their favourite contestant, but also to leave comments online. Contestants were asked to respond to mean ones on the spot.
The 15 finalists were picked from more than 300 candidates who joined the pageant after two rounds of interviews and online vote cast by about 200,000 internet users.
With five decades of history, the pageant – held on Sunday at TVB City in Tseung Kwan O – has produced some of the biggest stars in Asian entertainment, including Cannes Film Festival best actress Maggie Cheung and socialite Reis.
