Hongkongers will be able to get their hands on HK$30 (US$3.90) tickets for the city’s annual Cinema Day from May 7, with the organiser expecting 200,000 film fans to flock to theatres for the event aimed at giving back to society.
The Hong Kong Theatres Association announced ticketing arrangements on Thursday, about two weeks before Cinema Day’s return on May 10.
The association also provided an explanation for the 65 per cent decline in box office revenue over the Easter holiday.
“As for whether this was caused by more people travelling outside Hong Kong or going abroad to spend money – this is one of the reasons,” said Timothy Yuen Yin-man, the group’s chairman.
“Moreover, last year there were films that were oriented towards fans such as We 12, but there are not many new films during Easter this year.”
He was referring to the film that featured the 12 members of local boy band Mirror.
Revenue from film screenings in Hong Kong and Macau across four days from last Friday to Monday stood at HK$13.5 million, well below the HK$38.4 million generated during the same period in 2024.
A Minecraft Movie, a Hollywood film, topped the box office chart, generating HK$3.1 million over the four days of the Easter period. Flow, which won the Oscar for best animated feature, came second, earning HK$1.4 million.
Film-goers will be able to see any movie at the 53 participating cinemas for HK$30, with the offer also applying to VIP offerings.
Tickets go on sale from midday on May 7, except for those at Lux Theatre in Hung Hom, which will be available on May 9.
Transactions are limited to four tickets per person, with online sales subject to other restrictions by each cinema chain.
Yuen noted that the government would cover the price difference for the tickets, with several million dollars to be spent on the event.

He said the association was targeting a turnout of 200,000 people, matching the figure recorded in each of the past two editions.
The event was first introduced in 2023 as part of the “Happy Hong Kong” campaign, a government drive designed to bring some cheer to the city amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Beyond the box office slump, the city’s film industry also continues to face severe headwinds with shrinking audiences and cinema closures.
Asked what the government could do to help, Yuen suggested subsidies or other targeted assistance.
But he said the industry also had its own role to play.
“Everyone understands that film tastes have changed after the pandemic, I believe most filmmakers are working hard to think about how to come up with new ideas or ones that are suited to the Hong Kong market,” Yuen said.
