The Hong Kong government could reward those behind 700 reports that led to authorities reclaiming misused rental homes under a new incentive scheme, with each report potentially netting a reward of up to HK$3,000 (US$386).

As of the end of March, the Housing Department received 3,900 reports since the launch of the reward scheme in mid-January, but only about 1,700 opted for the cash reward, it said in a reply to the Post on Wednesday.

Upon initial screening, including inviting informants to attend interviews, about 700 of the 1,700 tip-offs could be further pursued for additional details, verification information and thorough investigations, the department added.

“To prevent misuse of the award, upon completion of investigations and successful issuance of a Notice-to-Quit [to households with tenancy abuse], the reported cases for receiving the reward will be reviewed and endorsed by an assessment panel chaired by a directorate officer,” the department’s spokesman said.

The Housing Authority, the city’s largest public housing provider, on January 15 launched a reward scheme for individuals aged 16 and above who provided information that allowed the government to reclaim a misused public rental flat.

Successful cases can result in a cash reward of up to HK$3,000 and a certificate of appreciation. The first round of certificates is expected to be presented in mid-2025.
