A barrister has withdrawn from the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, citing conflicts with her legal career among a number of reasons, while organising broadcaster TVB has said it “respected” her decision.
In a post on social media, Kimberlie Chu wrote: “Farewell Miss Hong Kong! I’ve withdrawn!”
Chu, who also took part in the contest in 2021 but was eliminated at the top 28 stage, said she had received many positive messages from friends since signing up again this year.
She is the second notable contestant to drop out of this year’s pageant, after Hong Kong’s youngest district councillor, 24-year-old Angel Chong Nga-ting, withdrew last month following controversy over her participation as a serving public representative.
Chu added she was “incredibly grateful” for her friends’ support and the attention from the media.
Bonnie Wong Tak-wei, assistant general manager of corporate communications at TVB said on Friday it “fully respected” Chu’s decision to prioritise her legal career.
“Decisions like these are deeply personal and often require considerable thought,” she said.
Wong added that the withdrawal would not be considered a formal resignation as Chu and all other candidates were still in the preliminary interview stage and had not yet officially entered the competition.

A spokesman for the Bar Association said that while it would not comment on individual cases, all barristers called to the bar were expected to follow the group’s code of conduct.
According to the association’s guidelines, barristers should not engage in other occupations that may adversely affect the reputation of the bar, or use his or her professional qualification for the advancement of any other occupation.
Barristers are also expected not to engage in conduct that may bring the profession into “disrepute or otherwise diminish public confidence”.
Chu recalled how she had been advised after the 2021 contest to try her luck again in the future.
She had felt it was time to “get back up where she had fallen” by entering this year’s competition.
“However, there’s a fine line between ‘perseverance’ and ‘obsession’,” the 26-year-old wrote in her social media post on Thursday.
“While theoretically there’s no direct conflict between being a barrister and working in entertainment, in practice, there are inevitably concerns.
“The judges also expect the Miss Hong Kong winner to actively participate in front-of-camera performances, but when faced with a conflict, I will steadfastly choose the law.”
She said that persisting with her participation would “only turn into a nagging obsession, and such an obsession is meaningless to me”.
Chu said she was at “the best” stage of her life and no longer needed the recognition of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, and wished the rest of the contestants could “find what they seek in life”.
Last year, she also appeared as a guest coach in the sixth season of An Exciting Offer, a mainland Chinese reality show where a group of students take internships at top law firms or companies and compete for a final offer of employment.
Sai Kung district councillor Chong’s participation came to light last month after she appeared at Tseung Kwan O TVB City for the first round of interviews. The move sparked heated discussions online and a message from home affairs minister Alice Mak Mei-kuen that district councillors needed to fulfil their duties.
