Hong Kong weather: T1 warning to remain in effect until at least 6pm on Friday
Observatory says tropical cyclone over South China Sea has continued to develop and is expected to bring scattered thunderstorms to city

The No 1 typhoon warning will remain in effect in Hong Kong until at least 6pm on Friday, with the approaching storm being the eighth to trigger an alert in the first eight months of 2025, the most over such a period since records began nearly 80 years ago.
The Observatory said a tropical cyclone currently over the South China Sea had continued to develop and was expected to bring scattered thunderstorms to the city on Friday.
The forecaster issued the No 1 signal at 7.10pm on Thursday and expected it to remain in force until at least 6pm on Friday.
“According to the present forecast, the tropical depression will move westwards across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea, in the general direction of the seas south of Hainan Island and slightly intensify today and tomorrow,” the forecaster earlier said.
“Under its combined effect with the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will be occasionally strong in some areas, including offshore and high ground, tonight and tomorrow.”
