Second street cleaner accident in a week as Hongkonger, 74, struck by car
Group representing industrial accident victims calls for review of cleaners’ equipment, as another was fatally struck by truck on New Year’s Eve
An elderly cleaner was injured after being struck by a left-hand drive car with a trade licence plate at a Hong Kong public housing estate – the second street-worker accident in just over a week.
Police received a report at 6.18am on Wednesday that a Geely multipurpose vehicle (MPV) was making a right turn out of a car park at Lek Yuen Estate in Sha Tin when it struck the cleaner pushing a trolley outside Kwai Wo House.
The accident left the 74-year-old victim, surnamed Wong, in a semi-conscious state and he was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for treatment.
The 32-year-old local motorist, who was driving a Geely Galaxy V900, remained at the scene to assist police with their investigation.
The vehicle had a T plate, a trade licence typically used by car dealers to move or test unregistered vehicles.
The V900 is a large luxury vehicle from the mainland Chinese carmaker. The car features a left-hand drive configuration, which is standard on the mainland but requires a specific permit for use on Hong Kong’s right-hand drive roads.
