More than 800 families displaced by the deadly Tai Po fire have expressed an interest in visiting their homes again after being allowed to return to the estate in recent weeks, a senior Hong Kong official has said.

The government also expressed confidence that at least three-quarters of homeowners of Wang Chi House – the only one of Wang Fuk Court’s eight blocks left largely unscathed by last November’s fire – would accept its buy-back package by the deadline at the end of June.

Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing said on Saturday that the government would evaluate the first round of the return scheme before announcing arrangements for the next one, noting that more than 800 families had already expressed an interest in going back again.

“For example, we would want to look into what would be the best order for residents to visit the homes to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible by considering which block to go first or whether residents should go together, and how we could improve on our manpower deployment,” Cheuk said.

“We will also need to coordinate the required timing based on experience. In fact, whether it’s 800 families, a little more or a little fewer, we’ll be able to make arrangements to accommodate them.”

He added that some residents had asked to have more time to pack their things.
