Hong Kong actress Barbara Chan Man-yee has died at the age of 66, five years after the death of her husband, actor Liu Kai-chi.
Chan’s sons said that she died peacefully on Friday morning, surrounded by family at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin after an illness. The announcement did not specify the nature of her condition.
Her husband died in the same hospital in 2021 after reportedly battling stomach cancer for several months.
“In accordance with her wishes during her lifetime, the memorial service will be held privately and discreetly,” the sons said, adding that the event would be restricted to close friends and family members.
Chan and Liu were familiar faces to Hong Kong audiences, having acted in numerous TVB dramas over the decades.
Chan became a leading actress at TVB in the 1980s and married her drama classmate Liu in 1987.
In 2006, the youngest of her three sons died of leukaemia at the age of five.
The couple’s loss of their child put a strain on the marriage as Chan later revealed she had suffered from depression.

On the couple’s wedding anniversary on November 11 last year, Chan reflected on her marriage and said she had hoped she and Liu would grow old together.
“My hair has long turned white, but sadly, he did not live to be old,” she wrote in a social media post.
“I wish that all lovers who have found each other would cherish the person in front of them every single day.”
In 2024, Chan said she threw a birthday party for herself for the first time, which doubled as a “farewell party” to show appreciation for the people in her life.
Last October, Chan revealed that she was experiencing health problems and was recovering from surgery she underwent last July.
She said that she had lost weight as the surgery “took a heavy toll on her body”, but added she had also cut sugar from her diet.
She also launched a YouTube channel last October, describing it a “special present” for herself.
Chan, a devout Christian, regularly uploaded videos about health and wellness, family relationships, positivity and happiness.
She also founded the Happiness Living Association last March, with the hope of providing companionship and connection for people who wished to live their lives well.
Up to her passing, Chan had been posting regularly on social media, including prayers for victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire.
The association regularly conducts aromatherapy and mental health workshops, with some sessions specially for victims of the Tai Po fire.
“We will carry on her original aspiration, allowing this spirit of ‘living life well and embracing happiness’ to continue flowing through our community,” the association said in a statement.
