Late Hong Kong actress Barbara Chan Man-yee embodied “unconditional love”, her son said at her memorial service on Thursday, attended by leading figures from the city’s entertainment industry, including director Johnnie To Kei-fung and actress Ada Choi Siu-fun.
A private service for the veteran actress was held at St Andrew’s Church in Tsim Sha Tsui, the same venue where her husband, actor Liu Kai-chi, was commemorated five years ago.
Chan died of illness earlier this month at the age of 66.
A framed photo of the actress, smiling with a full head of silver hair and wearing a graduation gown, greeted mourners at the church entrance, which was adorned with bouquets of white roses.
Her elder son, Liu Man-chit, broke down in tears during his eulogy as he thanked his mother and bid her farewell.
“I want to thank my mother because she taught me what unconditional love looks like,” he said.
He recalled that Chan had taught him from a young age that they did not need to fulfil anyone’s expectations.
“We just need to live a happy life – not an ecstatic or wild life, but a genuinely happy and blessed one,” the 29-year-old said. “I’m still slowly learning how to do that.”

Liu said they had once talked about everything, but had grown more distant as he got older.
“Even so, I’m so grateful that in the week before she was admitted to the hospital, John and I stayed in touch, and I was able to spend more time by her side,” he said. “In the final moments of her lucidity, I managed to say everything I needed to say to her.”
Her younger son, John Liu Man-shun, recalled how Chan said she had no regrets after the pair went stargazing during a trip to Mongolia last year.
They had first stargazed together while he was studying in Australia, and Chan had said she wanted to experience it again.
“We saw the night sky and the Milky Way in Mongolia; it was so clear that we could even see satellites,” he said.
“My mum was so happy, and she told me that she had no regrets because she had seen what she wanted most.”
The 27-year-old, a member of local YouTube channel Pomato, said they would spend time together watching television and recalled the days when she was well enough to drive him to work.
Preparations for the memorial also made him realise his mother’s strength in arranging their late father’s service five years ago.
“Even in such a grief-stricken state, she could handle so much on her own,” he said.

He added that he had tried to spend more time with his mother after his father’s death.
“My father’s passing made me realise how unpredictable life is … It made me realise that loved ones cannot stay with you forever,” he said.
The brothers performed One OK Rock’s “The Pilot </3” as a tribute to Chan.
Attendees included director To, veteran TVB actors Bowie Wu Fung and Lau Kong, while Choi and her husband, Max Zhang Jin, were among those in the choir singing hymns during the service.
Andy Lau Tak-wah, one of the “Four Heavenly Kings”, actor Chow Yun-fat and the Artiste Training Alumni Association also sent floral tributes.
While the service was not open to the public, it was live-streamed on Chan’s YouTube channel for loved ones overseas and members of the public who wished to pay their respects.
Chan and Liu were familiar faces to Hong Kong audiences, having appeared in numerous TVB dramas over the decades.
