The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red rainstorm warning for an hour on Monday night, while a suspected waterspout was spotted off Cheung Chau.
The red signal – the middle level in a three-tier system – was issued at 9.45pm but was cancelled at 10.45pm. An amber warning had been issued earlier, at 7.05pm.
The Observatory said more than 70mm of rainfall had fallen or was expected to fall within an hour in the Wan Chai area.
The forecaster issues a black rainstorm signal when heavy rain exceeding 70mm in an hour has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, and is likely to continue.
Residents in the vicinity were advised to take necessary precautions to avoid possible flood damage, the forecaster said.
In Cheung Chau, two residents reported seeing turbulent clouds off the coast of the island at 6.36pm, sparking discussions on social media over whether it was a waterspout.
The Observatory later said in a social media post that it could not confirm whether a waterspout had occurred, as it could not determine from a video whether the funnel cloud made contact with the water’s surface.
It noted that strong movement of heat in thunderstorms under unstable atmospheric conditions could generate vortices that appeared like a funnel cloud.
“If the vortex touches the ground surface, it is a tornado, but if it touches the sea surface, it is a waterspout,” the post said.
According to the forecaster, an active southerly airstream will bring showers and squally thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong in the next few days.
But with Tropical Cyclone Bavi moving towards the seas east of Taiwan, the weather will become fine over southern China later this week, with the forecaster anticipating sunny periods on Thursday afternoon as well as hot temperatures on Friday and Saturday.
