Hong Kong woman killed, 5 others injured in car crash in Japan’s Hokkaido
Crash is second traffic accident to involve city residents in prefecture in less than a week
A 53-year-old Hong Kong woman died and five others were injured in a head-on car crash in Japan on Monday, in the second traffic accident involving city residents in Hokkaido prefecture in less than a week.
Japanese news outlets reported that a rental car carrying a family of four from Hong Kong crossed into the opposite lane on National Route 38 in Furano and collided with another vehicle carrying two Japanese nationals at around 3.30pm local time.
The woman was sitting in the front passenger seat, and her 52-year-old husband was driving. Their two teenage daughters were sitting in the back.
The Japanese couple in the other car, a man and a woman in their twenties, also sustained injuries.
Local police are investigating why the rental car crossed into oncoming traffic.
The crash occurred along a route that connects the cities of Takikawa, Akabira and Furano, popular with tourists.
The Immigration Department said it had reached out to the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong and the Chinese consulate general in Sapporo after receiving a request for help.
