Worker, 62, dies after falling from platform while repairing plane at Hong Kong airport
Man falls from six-metre-high platform at Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company worksite after mistakenly stepping into gap, police say
A 62-year-old worker has died after falling from a six-metre-high (20-foot) platform while repairing an aeroplane at the Hong Kong International Airport.
Police received a report at 8.35am on Monday that a worker had been injured at a site operated by the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (Haeco).
“Preliminary investigations have shown that when the worker was repairing a plane on site, he accidentally fell from a six-metre work platform,” a police spokesman said.
He added that the male worker had been repairing the aircraft’s fuselage indoors. The fall was thought to have happened when he mistakenly stepped into a gap between two work platforms.
The man was unconscious when officers arrived at the scene and was taken to North Lantau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10.07am.
Hong Kong has reported at least 62 industrial accidents, 24 of them fatal, in the first half of this year, according to data from the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims and media reports compiled by the South China Morning Post.
