Woman dies after being knocked down on Hong Kong motorway, taxi driver arrested

  • Pedestrian, 44, suffers fatal head injuries while walking on Tsing Long Highway in early hours of Wednesday
  • Driver held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, following fourth serious traffic incident on same road in as many weeks

A 44-year-old woman has died after being knocked down by a car while walking on a Hong Kong motorway in the early hours of Wednesday.

A taxi driver, 72, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

The pedestrian, surnamed Nie, the holder of a Hong Kong identity card, was crossing the six-lane Tsing Long Highway in Tsing Yi, near Ting Kau Bridge, when tragedy stuck at 1.40am.

Suffering serious head injuries, the woman was taken unconscious to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan, where she was certified dead at 3.11am.

A police source said the accident happened just minutes after reports of a woman wandering on the highway.

He said police were still investigating how she ended up on the carriageway. Officers from the New Territories South traffic unit were handling the case.

As of noon, the arrested motorist was still being held for questioning and had not been charged.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police at 3661 1300 or 3661 1344.

It was the serious fourth traffic incident on the same highway in as many weeks.

A week ago, 11 people were injured in a collision between two double-deckers in the highway near Tai Lam Tunnel’s toll gate in Pat Heung.

On July 30, 77 people were injured when two double-deckers collided near the Tsuen Wan exit of the tunnel.
On July 18, a bus driver died and 14 people were injured in a collision between a truck and a Citybus vehicle outside the Pat Heung exit of the tunnel.

According to the latest police figures, 55 people died in 54 fatal traffic accidents across the city in the first seven months of 2019.
