A citywide search has been launched for a hit-and-run taxi driver suspected of running a red light and leaving a man fighting for his life at a Hong Kong crossing in the early hours of Wednesday.

The 33-year-old pedestrian, a Hong Kong identity card holder of Indian origin, suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident on the westbound lane of Queen’s Road East, near the junction with Stone Nullah Lane, which happened soon after 1am in Wan Chai.

“Initial investigation showed the victim was knocked down by a taxi at the traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossing,” a police source said.

“He was catapulted about two metres from the impact before landing on the slow lane of the carriageway.”

Police said the driver of the car did not stop at the scene, but sped away.

The man suffered serious injuries to his pelvis and was taken unconscious to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam.

Police believed the front of the taxi was damaged. Officers from the Hong Kong Island traffic unit were trying to track down the car and its driver.

According to police, the site was not a traffic black spot. The speed limit in the area is 50km/h.
