Hong Kong commuters warned to expect more disruptions as MTR Corporation battles to remove derailed carriages from East Rail line
- East Rail services between Hung Hom and Mong Kok East stations remain suspended following Tuesday morning’s incident
- Derailment near East Rail terminus injured eight people and has caused disruption to road traffic in vicinity
Hong Kong commuters should prepare for a partial suspension of the East Rail line spilling into Wednesday morning as embattled railway operator MTR Corporation races to remove carriages derailed on Tuesday.
That was the warning from Hong Kong Federation of Railway Trade Unions chairman Lam Wai-keung, who said the corporation would need more time to move two of three derailed carriages back onto the tracks.
It spent most of Tuesday moving the third carriage.
Hong Kong-bound vehicle traffic on Hong Chong Road was expected to be disrupted, with a section of one lane of the main trunk road closed to accommodate a giant crane being used to help move the three carriages.
East Rail line services between Hung Hom and Mong Kok East stations would remain suspended for the rest of Tuesday, according to the MTR Corp, while, from 8.25pm, trains between Mong Kok East and Lo Wu stations were running at four-minute intervals, and between Tai Po Market station and Lok Ma Chau station every 12 minutes.
