Hong Kong rail service returning to normal after disruptions caused by overhead cable braking on Tung Chung line

  • Replacement bus service running between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations
  • Services between Hong Kong and Sunny Bay running at eight-minute intervals

Train services between Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations in Hong Kong were suspended at one stage on Friday afternoon after an overhead cable broke.

Rail operator the MTR Corporation said a free shuttle bus service would run between the two Tung Chung line stations.

Sunny Bay station is the interchange between the city and the Disneyland Resort on Lantau Island.

Trains were running at eight-minute intervals between Hong Kong station and Sunny Bay.

The MTR Corp said repairs were taking place.

Services on the Airport Express, which runs parallel to the Tung Chung line in places, were affected as well, with trains running every 12 minutes instead of every 10.

Its in-town check-in services were revised. Passengers seeking to check in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations have to get it done 120 minutes before their flight takes off instead of 90 minutes.

The disruption lasted for about an hour.

The corporation said that at about 2.25pm, a train without any passengers heading to the Sunny Bay depot halted suddenly after part of the overhead cable was damaged. The carriage was partially stuck on the track, which affected services.

At about 3.45pm, Tung Chung line and Airport Express services gradually resumed after the carriage was removed from the track and the overhead cable repaired.

The MTR Corp said it would investigate what caused the damage.
