A false fire alarm forced a Singapore Airlines cargo plane bound for Shanghai to make an emergency landing in Hong Kong on Friday night, resulting in the temporary closure of an airport runway that affected nine incoming flights.

The fire alarm went off at 10.27pm (10.27am, US Eastern Time) and the Boeing 747 aircraft landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport at 10.53pm, a police spokesman said. No fire was detected.

A Singapore Airlines spokesperson said the pilots of the flight carried out the necessary checks before landing and “it was determined to be a false alarm, with no evidence of a fire or smoke in the aircraft”.

According to the Hong Kong Airport Authority, the northern runway was temporarily closed for the landing, which took about 54 minutes. It resumed service at 11.06pm.

Nine flights which were about to land on the runway were instructed to divert and touch down on the southern runway instead, the authority added.
