Kowloon-bound side of Hong Kong’s Tate’s Cairn Tunnel reopened after coach fire halts traffic

  • Police say flames spotted on side of vehicle, and passengers had evacuated by the time officers arrived
  • Transport Department announces at around 10am that the affected lane is reopened but congestion will take time to clear

Hong Kong transport authorities reopened the Kowloon-bound side of Tate’s Cairn Tunnel after it was earlier in the morning shut down due to a coach that caught fire.

Police said they received a report at around 8.45am of flames spotted on a side of the vehicle, which had stopped at a lay-by near the crossing.

“There was some fire and smoke at the edge of the coach. Officers arrived and saw passengers had got off. No one was hurt,” a force spokesman said.

The Transport Department earlier said on its website that all Kowloon-bound lanes of the tunnel were closed due to the incident.

“Motorists are advised to use alternative tunnels such as Lion Rock Tunnel,” it added, citing traffic congestion.

It said at around 10am that the lanes had been reopened with traffic taking time to disperse, adding that KMB bus services were still affected.
