A driver, 53, was killed near Tai Lam Tunnel in Hong Kong early on Monday morning after getting hit by a crane truck while his vehicle was parked at a lay-by, leading to the partial closure of the New Territories crossing during rush hour.

Police arrested the 32-year-old truck driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death after the incident took place at the Pat Heung entrance of the tunnel at around 6.30am.

The Kowloon-bound lane of the tunnel was closed off, according to the Transport Department at 8am. A one-tube, two-way traffic arrangement was implemented, with motorists advised to drive through the area with “utmost care and patience”.

Two private vehicles, a BMW and Tesla, had earlier collided at around 6.30am, about 50 metres (164 feet) from the tunnel entrance as they were heading towards Kowloon after passing toll booths.

Both vehicles were steered into a lay-by and the drivers got out to assess the situation.

“When the BMW driver got out for checks, a heavy goods vehicle was believed to have failed to stop in time and knocked down the 53-year-old man from behind,” police said.

The victim was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan with serious injuries, where he was later declared dead.
