Four people were injured after a crane truck toppled over onto two vehicles at the entrance of a construction site for the redevelopment of Grantham Hospital in Hong Kong on Monday.

The crane was lifting construction materials at the site outside the hospital on Wong Chuk Hang Road in Aberdeen shortly before 11am when the incident occurred, police said.

A police spokesman said the two vehicles were hit when the crane crashed down.

“A preliminary investigation showed the crane had toppled over in the site, hitting a medium goods vehicle and a delivery van,” the spokesman said.

He added the van driver was initially trapped but later freed by emergency services.

He also said the man was among the three people injured and sent to hospital for treatment. The others were the driver and passenger of the truck.

The three suffered minor injuries and were taken to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam.

A spokesman for Grantham Hospital said a woman site worker was treated at the scene. She did not require hospital treatment.

All lanes of the slip road from the Aberdeen Tunnel-bound Wong Chuk Hang Road to Grantham Hospital were closed to traffic as of 7.43pm following the incident, the Transport Department said.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.

The Grantham Hospital spokesman said: “The Hospital Authority has shown great concern about the incident, promptly sent personnel to the construction site, and instructed the main contractor to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report.

“The contractor has also been directed to take necessary measures to strengthen site safety.”

The spokesman said the authority had further instructed the contractor to suspend the lifting of heavy objects on the site. The authority would fully cooperate with police, the Labour Department, and other relevant government agencies in their investigations, he added.

The spokesman said hospital services were not affected by the incident.
