A Hong Kong truck driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after an extended crane on the back of his vehicle hit an overhead cable on Thursday, disrupting rail services in the New Territories for about three hours.

Police said the 47-year-old was switching from Castle Peak Road to Long Tin Road in Yuen Long when the extended crane struck the overhead cable near the Shui Pin Wai light rail stop at around 2.16pm.

A force spokesman said no casualties were reported during the incident, adding that the driver was still being held for questioning as of 5pm. Officers from the New Territories North traffic unit are handling the case.

The MTR Corporation said four light rail routes – 610, 614, 615 and 761P – had to be diverted, while a free shuttle bus service was arranged for affected passengers during the disruption.

The company said at about 5.12pm that the temporary repair work for the damaged overhead line had been completed, with light rail services gradually resuming afterward.
