A Hong Kong police sergeant travelling in the Thai resort town of Pattaya died earlier this week after he fell from an open-air songthaew truck.

Surveillance footage obtained by local media shows the man fell from the back of the taxi van and onto the road as it drove through the South Pattaya district.

The driver later surrendered himself to local authorities, but said he was unaware the Hong Kong policeman had fallen off until he watched the news and the vehicle’s owner told him.

A Thai police spokesman said officers would meet with local songthaew operators to discuss how to prevent such accidents in the future.

The Post explains what the songthaew are and how to ride them safely.

What are songthaew?

The word “songthaew” in Thai literally means “two rows”, and refers to converted pickup trucks with covered back seating areas that feature two benches which face each other.
